MEDIA ADVISORY Washington, DC September 12, 2005 - Washington, DC
based author and poet Charisse Carney-Nunes is poised to forge into the
competitive children's book market with NAPPY (ISBN: 978-0-9748142-1-6
Brand Nu Words 2006), a humorous and delightfully illustrated children's
hardback based on the poem of the same title that proved to be her hottest
commodity. Carney-Nunes' first book sold more than 1,500 copies, and the
anticipation of the NAPPY release has created a buzz amongst her readers. "A celebration of self-worth, cultural awareness and strength is woven neatly throughout the pages of this beautifully illustrated tribute to women of African ancestry and their 'super-nappturally Nappy' hair. The story, though joyful and light-hearted, contains a powerful message about history, heritage and high self-esteem. A 'must read' for all, especially children, parents, and teachers!" said Gloria Harper Dickinson, Ph.D., Chairperson, Department of African American Studies The College of New Jersey; 2001-2004 National President, The Association for the Study of African American Life & History. NAPPY is not only a children's "hair story." It is a history lesson and educational tool for parents, teachers and older children. The book's back matter contains biographical sketches about each of the Black women referenced in the story, alongside beautiful original sketches of the women by Ann Marie Williams. Ms. Williams is an award-winning painter and fine artist residing in Reston, Virginia. She and Carney-Nunes met when the graphic artist was tapped to design the cover of an educational publication to which Charisse was a contributing author. The official release date for NAPPY is not until January 2006. Meanwhile, Carney-Nunes will make appearances along the East Coast at various locations, including Harvard University, Friday, September 16, 2005, the Capital Book Fest, Saturday, October 1, 2005, and Karibu Books, Saturday, December 3, 2005 where she will offer a limited number of pre-release copies direct from the publisher in order to accommodate the 2005 holiday season.
