AUTHOR OF A PHENOMENAL CHILDREN'S STORY ABOUT ACCEPTANCE CELEBRATES
BOOK RELEASE WITH TRIBUTE TO CIVIL RIGHTS LEGENDS FOR KIDS
Washington, DC November 7, 2005 - On November 12,
2005 at 1:00pm, Washington, DC based author and poet Charisse Carney-Nunes
will celebrate the release of NAPPY (ISBN: 978-0-9748142-1-6 Brand Nu
Words 2006), a humorous and delightfully illustrated children's hardback
based on the poem of the same title with a book release party to include
a special tribute to Civil Rights icon, Rosa Parks, who died last week.
Parks is one of ten African-American women featured in the book. The celebration,
which will be held at the historic Thurgood Marshall Center for Service,
1816 12th Street, NW, Washington, DC, will include free and fun activities
for children, including storytelling, moon bouncing, and face painting.
The author, who's poem, "Nappy," spawned strong reactions of
joy, laughter, tears, and "hair stories" whenever she delivered
it, explains, "I was inspired by doing my own daughter's hair, and
was motivated to instill in her the strength of Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks,
Ella Baker, and so many others."
"A celebration of self-worth, cultural awareness and strength is
woven neatly throughout the pages of this beautifully illustrated tribute
to women of African ancestry and their 'super-nappturally Nappy' hair.
The story, though joyful and light-hearted, contains a powerful message
about history, heritage and high self-esteem." said Gloria Harper
Dickinson, Ph.D., Chairperson, Department of African American Studies
The College of New Jersey; 2001-2004 National President, The Association
for the Study of African American Life & History.
NAPPY is not only a children's "hair story." It is a history
lesson and educational tool for parents, teachers and older children.
The book's back matter contains biographies about each of the Black women
honored in the story, alongside beautiful original sketches of the women
by Ann Marie Williams, winner of the 2006 Cherry Blossom Festival Art
Competition. Ms. Williams, an award-winning painter and fine artist residing
in Reston, Virginia, brought Carney-Nunes' vision to life with poignant
colorful illustrations.
The official release date for NAPPY is not until January 2006. Meanwhile,
to accommodate the 2005 holiday season, Carney-Nunes has several scheduled
upcoming appearances where she will offer a limited number of pre-release
copies, including a Literary Café
sponsored by the Federal City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
on Sunday, November 20, 2005, where she will appear with famed poet Nikki
Giovanni, two signings at Karibu Books on Saturday, December 3, 2005,
and a New Jersey book release party on December 17, 2005. To find out
