- In New York, Hue-Man Bookstore has 28 copies in stock. GET IT THERE!! Also, every Borders has at least 1 copy if you can't make it into the city.
- ASK FOR IT BY NAME! Remember, my entire last name is Carney-Nunes
- READ the book with your children. It’s appropriate for all ages.
- SHARE and DISCUSS the information in the back of the book with your children.
- LEARN the Adinkra symbols associated with each of the Covenant principles.
- ENCOURAGE your children to take the steps listed under each principle. Here are just a few…
- Take School Seriously. Make a covenant to take school seriously. In America today, many people do not know how to read or write. These people are not able to experience the joy you feel after you have learned something new in school which you can’t wait to share with others. You need to make a promise to yourself and your family that you are going to try your hardest to learn something new everyday and use it to make the world a better place.
- No Bullying. Make a covenant to be kind to others, and don’t be a bully. When you tease or bully other kids, it makes them sad and prevents them from living a happy life. Respect your school mates and treat them the way you want them to treat you. If other kids are bullying you, tell a grown-up who you trust, and do it TODAY. You should not keep sad feelings inside.
- Join or start an after school program. After school programs are important to children and families. Millions of kids across the United States take care of themselves after school while their parents are still at work. Many kids get into trouble because they are bored and do not have enough to do. Talk to your parents and teachers about joining a club or sports team that meets after school. If there is no program at your school, talk to your teachers about starting one. There is a great organization called the Afterschool Alliance that can send you an action kit that will help you. You can download the kit from the publications page on their website at www.AfterschoolAlliance.org, or you can call or write them at 1616 H St. NW, Washington, DC 20006, 202-347-1002.
- Support Black Colleges! After you finish high school, go to a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). HBCUs are an important part of the history of America and of the rural South. HBCUs have been educating Black college students since Lincoln University first opened its doors more than 150 years ago! Virtually all HBCUs are located in the South. Attending an HBCU is a good way to get an excellent education, while doing your part to strengthen an important Black institution of the rural South.
- Give money to charity. An important lesson to learn about money is that you should always give a portion of your money away to help others. For example, if you go to church, you might donate part of your allowance to the church to help the church with a community program like feeding homeless people. Giving away some of your money makes you feel good because you are helping good things happen that might not happen if you did not do your part.
- Learn about the environment. Do a school report about where your food and water come from. Understanding the systems that we rely on for basic necessities gives you a better idea of what other influences could be threatening to you. How is your food grown? Are things added to the plants to help them grow? How is water treated so that it is safe to drink?
